Blackjack is a popular casino game that has been played for centuries. It is a game of strategy and skill that requires players to make quick decisions based on the cards they are dealt. The objective of the game is to have a hand value of 21 or as close to 21 as possible without going over. In this guide, we will explore the basics of Blackjack strategy and card counting.

Basic Blackjack Strategy

Basic Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack strategy involves making decisions based on the cards you are dealt and the dealer’s upcard. The basic strategy is a set of rules that tell you when to hit, stand, double down or split based on your hand value and the dealer’s upcard.

  • If your hand value is 8 or less, always hit
  • If your hand value is 17 or more, always stand
  • If your hand value is 12-16, stand if the dealer’s upcard is 2-6. Hit if the dealer’s upcard is 7 or higher
  • If your hand value is 10 or 11, double down if the dealer’s upcard is 2-9
  • If you have a pair of 2s, 3s, 6s, 7s or 9s, split if the dealer’s upcard is 2-7. Otherwise, hit.
  • If you have a pair of 4s, always hit
  • If you have a pair of 5s, double down if the dealer’s upcard is 2-9
  • If you have a pair of 8s, always split
  • If you have a pair of Aces, always split

Card Counting

Card counting is a strategy used by professional Blackjack players to gain an advantage over the casino. It involves keeping track of the cards that have been dealt and using that information to make decisions about the remaining cards in the deck.

The basic principle of card counting is that if there are more high cards (10s and Aces) remaining in the deck, the player has a higher chance of getting a Blackjack. If there are more low cards (2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s), the dealer has a higher chance of busting.

The most popular card counting system is the Hi-Lo system. It involves assigning a value of +1 to cards 2-6, a value of 0 to cards 7-9 and a value of -1 to cards 10-Ace. The player keeps a running count of the cards that have been dealt and adjusts their bets based on the count.

For example, if the running count is +10, the player knows that there are more high cards remaining in the deck. This means that they have a higher chance of getting a Blackjack and should increase their bets accordingly. Conversely, if the running count is -10, the player knows that there are more low cards remaining in the deck. This means that the dealer has a higher chance of busting and the player should decrease their bets.

Card counting is a strategy used by professional players to gain an advantage over the casino by keeping track of the cards that have been dealt. By using these strategies, players can increase their chances of winning at Blackjack.
